Most hair naturally includes a variety of colors, shades and tones to give your hair the color you see. If you don't like your natural highs and lows, you don't have to get used to it--you can change it. Both natural and chemical methods are available to get rid of ugly natural highlights and create beautiful color.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Identify your natural color. Look at the roots and underside of your hair and at your eyebrows to see what color is natural for you. No matter what highlights show throughout your hair, focus on the main color.
Step2
Consider dying your hair the color of your natural roots and eyebrows. Use a semi-permanent or permanent hair dye bought from the grocery or drug store, following the directions exactly. See if this overall color boost enhances those highlights you hated before.
Step3
Use Sun-In, lemon juice or chamomile tea for a natural way of lightening and adding shine to your hair. Add a little conditioner to keep your hair soft and go out and sit in the sun while the color activates. Do this a few times and you can really see a difference.
Step4
Rinse your hair in apple cider or red wine vinegar to get rid of odd colors and enrich the natural tones in your hair. Add a couple tablespoons to your dollop of shampoo and work into your hair in the shower. Rinse with warm water and follow with a conditioner. Do this once a week, or more often if needed.
Step5
Visit a hairstylist for professional help. If you really don't like your natural hair color and highlights and are nervous about attempting color on your own--or have attempted it without great results--have a pro fix the problem. Tell him or her exactly what you don't like and how you want it to look when they've finished the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash your hair immediately after dying it if you hate the color or really messed up the process. Rinse in vinegar to try and strip out as much color as possible before it really sets into the strands. Make sure to condition the hair, as it needs the extra care.
  • Avoid dying your hair over and over without giving it a break. Unless a professional tells your otherwise, wait at least a week before dying hair again to make sure it stays healthy and soft.
