It can be so frustrating when you hear a song on a website that you would like to download, but when you look for a link and you can't find one. Luckily, with a little extra effort and the right plug-ins, you can still copy the audio file using the browser Safari's features.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Apple QuickTime Pro
Step1
Choose "View Source" from the View Menu. A new window will open with the page's HTML code.
Step2
Open the search field. Choose "Find" from the Edit Menu's Find Submenu. A search bar will appear at the top of the window.
Step3
Enter for ".mp3" in the search field. Safari will take you to a URL address for the song.
Step4
Paste the entire URL in the URL finder. The song will load into QuickTime. Wait for it to play entirely.
Step5
Save the file to disk. Click on the triangle at the bottom right of the QuickTime control bar. Choose "Save as Source" from the pulldown menu and save the file to your hard drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't find an MP3 file with the find command, try searching for other formats (".wav," ".aif".) If that doesn't work, search for "embed."
  • If the URL path just contains a file name (e.g., "song.mp3"), you need to add the URL of the site playing the song to complete the address. For instance, http://www.goodsong/index would now be "http://www.goodsong/song.mp3."
  • Apple QuickTime must be the default music player for your browser.
