How to Respond to a Job Performance Review

A job performance review is like a report card for an adult. Sometimes we know exactly what to expect and other times we're totally surprised or devastated by the review. Use the job performance review as a tool for growth. Approach it with a positive attitude in order to make the most of it and to positively influence your experience with the organization.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen carefully to the manager as she goes over the review step-by-step. Listen objectively. Reserve comment until the appropriate time. Keep in mind that this is a good time to review the job and its suitability.

    • 2

Take several minutes to read over the review when given a copy. Focus on the positive aspects of the review. Read the added written comments carefully. Review anything that isn't clear or that wasn't covered in the discussion.

    • 3

Own up to the portions of the review that correctly address lacking expertise or difficulties. Acknowledge the need for improvement. Be positive. Resist any urge to make excuses.

    • 4

Regard any suggestion for improvement as an opportunity, to learn and grow in the company. Inquire about developing the skills for additional training.

    • 5

Ask the manager to help set goals for improvement. Suggest that a schedule be set to assess growth prior to the next job performance review. Make known a desire to perform well and receive positive feedback.

    • 6

Resist the temptation to challenge the reviewer's decision. Consider that the review offers insight about how you're perceived by others.

    • 7

Look ahead. Focus on changes in performance in the workplace. Accept the review, use the information to your benefit and move onto putting goals into action.

Tips & Warnings

  • If a review seems unreasonably negative or if you suspect a personality conflict with the manager, take the issue to the Human Resource Department. Don't argue with the manager.
