If you are living in a Presidential-declared disaster area in Louisiana, you may be eligible for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Many people received assistance from FEMA after Hurricane Katrina. U.S citizens and other qualifying individuals can receive temporary housing, money for home repair or replacement, and reimbursement of expenses related to the disaster.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Review the FEMA eligibility requirements for aid. Your damage must be to a primary residence and not covered by insurance. Money is also provided to replace, clothing, furniture, vehicles and other personal property. You can also receive money to cover moving costs, medical costs, funeral costs and other costs related to the disaster.
Step2
Apply for aid online at the FEMA website or call (800) 621-FEMA (3362). Be prepared to provide your Social Security Number, a contact phone number and directions to your property. Also have ready your insurance information and a description of your losses.
Step3
Wait for a FEMA-contracted inspector to contact you within approximately 10 days after applying. The inspector will set up an appointment.
Step4
Receive a letter notifying confirming or denying eligibility. If eligible, funds will be transfer to your bank account or you will receive a check.

Tips & Warnings

  • Money received from FEMA is tax-free.
  • You must keep receipts and bills so you can demonstrate the money was used for eligible expenses, or you may have to give the money back.
