Step 1
Check the pattern on the glass piece. Cut glass pieces have the pattern cut into them after the molding process. Pressed glass pieces have the pattern pressed into them during the molding process.
-
Step 2
Look for mold marks on the glass. There aren't any mold marks on cut glass. The mold marks disappear from cutting and polishing the cut glass pattern. Pressed glass generally has mold marks. The mold marks form between the sections of the mold where a tiny bit of glass seeps through the sections.
-
Step 3
Inspect the definitions of the small detailed areas of the pattern. Cut glass has clearly defined and detailed patterns even on very intricate designs. Pressed glass has some blurring on most areas of fine intricate details.
-
Step 4
Feel the difference of the glass patterns. Cut glass has sharp edges. The edges of pressed glass are rounded or smooth.
-
Step 5
Tap the glass piece and listen to the sound. Cut glass rings with a clear tone. The sound of pressed glass is more of a flat, dull thud.
-
Step 6
View the piece of glass in sunlight or under a bright light. Cut glass sparkles and reflects the light source. Pressed glass doesn't have the same radiant quality.
