How to Climb a Tree With no Branches

Tree climbing is a good way to exercise and experience nature with a whole new perspective: from the top of a tree. It also makes a great year-round sport.

Instructions

1. Grip the tree firmly, interlocking your hands behind the tree trunk. If you can't fit your hands around the tree's trunk, try holding onto the bark when tree climbing.

2. Wear shoes with rubber or synthetic soles with a strong grip. These work better than spiked shoes, which can damage the tree as you climb.

3. Jump up, placing both feet on the tree. Use your hands to keep yourself in the right position and to handle the weight of your body.

4. Practice holding yourself in position with your feet planted on the tree, leaning back and holding yourself up with your hands. Try to stay this way for at least a minute.

5. Move up by pushing upwards with your feet, sliding your hands up and pulling upwards while climbing the tree.

Tips & Warnings

• Never climb near power lines. It's not always possible to see where you're going when climbing. Tree climbers have been electrocuted this way.

• Never climb trees that contain animal or insect nests, or that appear diseased. These trees are not safe to climb; you could fall very quickly.
