Setting a table properly for a wedding reception includes more than just putting out dishes, silverware and glassware. In addition, you must consider placing additional items such as centerpieces and keepsakes to create a memorable setting.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set the forks. Wedding reception place settings have two forks: one for the salad and one for the main course. Salad forks go to the left of the place setting; place dinner forks to the right of the salad fork.

  2. Step 2

Place the remaining silverware. Place the butter knife on the right of the place setting, blade facing inward (to the left). Place the teaspoon to the right of the knife. Steak knives go in between the butter knife and the teaspoon, if needed. Place the soup spoon to the right of the teaspoon, if necessary.

  3. Step 3

Situate the bread and butter plate above the forks.

  4. Step 4

Put the red wine glass above and slightly to the right of the spoon. Place the white wine glass to the left and slightly above the red wine glass, and place the water glass to the left and slightly above the white wine glass. The result will look like the glasses are on a slight diagonal. Add the glassware for champagne service to the left and slightly above the water glass.

  5. Step 5

Position seat assignment cards between the silver of each place setting, below the napkin. If the napkin is in the center, place the seat assignment card above the napkin toward the top of the place setting.

  6. Step 6

Add the centerpieces. For round tables, the centerpiece goes in the center of the table and for long tables, the centerpieces must be evenly spaced throughout.

  7. Step 7

Finish off the table setting with a keepsake such as a little basket of Jordan almonds or a matchbook with the bride and groom's name on it. Depending on the placement of the napkin, put the keepsake either at the top or center of the setting.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you set a wedding reception table, make sure the bottom of the silverware at each setting lines up for a uniform look.
  • Use a fine mist water sprayer and mist the tablecloth the day before the wedding reception, before you begin setting the table. The fine mist pulls the wrinkles out of the tablecloth as it dries.
