Step 1
Start learning basketball basics at a young age. Both of Yao's parents are Chinese basketball players and they started teaching Yao the sport before the age of 10. Continue a basketball focus by attending a camp or school like Shanghai's Provincial Sports Academy and hours of practice.
-
Step 2
Have a basketball role model to watch and immolate. Yao at a young age tried to replicate his idol, soviet, Arvydas Sabonis. Also, play on various teams from summer youth teams to smaller city teams for exposure to varying types of basketball styles that strengthens your skill. Yao played center on the Shanghai Youth team, in the Chinese Basketball Association, at Nike basketball camps and even in the 2000 Olympics.
-
Step 3
Dedicate hours to daily training, with the team and on a personal level. Yao begins daily with 2 hours of strength and conditioning training, and he trains for the mental aspect of basketball. The strength training helps you keep your center position and defend the basketball against shooters and other post players.
-
Step 4
Seek outside training advice that benefits your entire skill set. Most centers focus on post moves and blocking shots, but Yao shoots, posts up and defends the basket well. Hakeem Olajuwon has trained with Yao to help him strengthen his level of assertiveness as well, so, defenders respect him more in the paint. Yao's training includes performing center moves in repetition so the move is natural.
-
Step 5
Stay humble, clean cut and a hard working basketball player that others enjoy watching and supporting. Fans voted Yao to be the top center of the Western conference all-star game in his first season. Yao, himself, feels he is a blue collar player among the all-stars.
