If you have a creative career or hobby, I think you have to design your home office with that in mind. In this article, I'll give you a few ideas that will allow you to stay organized without your creativity suffering in the process.

Things You'll Need:

  • The desire to create a fun home office environment where you can think creatively
  1. Step 1

A great place to start in any room is color. In designing a creative environment, I like warm colors because they boost your mood and naturally make you feel more alert even without a lot of natural sunlight. If you have a window however, use vertical blinds where you can easily have them shut (keeps glare off your computer) but can open them to look outside on occasion.

  2. Step 2

After you've arranged your desk and other furniture the way you like, take some time in deciding on items that will inspire your thinking including artwork, desk figures, and even puzzles and toys. It's also great to have at least one marker board and one bulletin board. This way when an idea hits you, you can either write or post it in front of you.

  3. Step 3

Probably the best way of organizing ideas that I've found in writing is keeping a lot of notebooks--one in the office, a second by the bed, a third in the car, etc. If you're having creative block, try doing part of your thinking away from the office and come back later. I've heard similar ways of thinking with artists and musicians. What matters in how you organize is that it helps you personally, and it may not fit into how other people think.
