Millions of credit card holders are due a refund of at least $25 as a result of a class action lawsuit that was recently settled. Not everyone received notice of the settlement, and will have to file a claim form to receive their refund. Here's how.
Background. In 2007, the courts found that Visa, Master Card, and Diner's Club had improperly charged credit card holders for foreign transactions. As a result, millions of customers received claim forms in the mail, notifying them that they were part of the class action settlement, and due a refund on currency conversion fees (fees for changing US dollars into foreign money). Not everyone received a claim form, however.
Step2
Eligibility. If you had a Visa, Master Card, or Diner's Club credit card almost anytime between 1996 and 2006 AND you made a foreign transaction on the card (made a purchase or used an ATM), then you are part of the class action lawsuit and settlement.
Step3
Amount. Most credit card holders who file a claim will receive an automatic $25 refund as part of the settlement, but it's possible to get more if you can document large amounts of foreign currency purchases.
Step4
More information. Visit the FAQs page for the settlement to find out more (see resource links, below).
Step5
Filing. Call 1-800-945-9890 to contact the law firm for a claim notice. You can also find it online (see resources, below).
Tips & Warnings
It was not necessary to have traveled to a foreign country, only to have purchased something from outside the US.
