Step1
Find the cheap gas station.
Two web sites you can use to search for and compare the gas price.
Gasbuddy -- http://www.gasbuddy.com/
Gas Price -- http://autos.msn.com/everyday/gasstations.aspx?zip&src=Netx
Check the Resource section for web site links, too.
Step2
Fill up tank at right time.
Try to fill up tank in the morning, late evening or even at night.
Cloudy days are better than hot sunny days.
When you fill up gas at noon (higher temperature than morning/night), you have to spend little bit of money on the same amount of gas.
Moreover, gas has higher evaporation rate in higher temperature. So choose a right time to fill up your gas.
Step3
Get Gas rebate credit cards.
Use credit card at gas stations. Many credit cards offer cash rebate on gas. You may earn 3 to 5% on regular gas purchase. Chase bank has such good credit cards. Here are the examples,
BP visa card -
You earn 10% for first 60 days at BP gas stations and 5% thereafter.
Hess credit card -
You earn 10% for first 90 days at Hess gas stations and 5% thereafter.
Chase freedom signature card and Preferred platinum card -
Offer at least 3% rebate on gas purchase at any gas station.
American Express True Earnings Card -
This card from AE also has 3% rebate on gas purchase at any gas stations.
There are many other good credit cards from other banks. Try to get one credit card like BP/Hess that gives you best rebate and one credit card like chase freedom or AE true earning. When BP/Hess are cheap or as same price like others, stop at their stations to max your rebate, otherwise, pick up any cheap gas stations and use other credit cards to earn rewards.
If you spend $2000/year on your gas, you may get up to $120 of rebate. So why pay cash for gas ?
Step4
Keep you car in good condition.
Some tricks to save you more gas. Change motor oil regularly and better motor oil lubricates engine better. Check the tire pressure every week. If possible, don't keep too much heavy-weight stuffs in your car. Less weight of car consumes less gas.
Also, you may try to add fuel-system cleaner to keep you car at optimal operation. You can find those cleaners at Wal-mart or any other auto part retailers.
Step5
Get a new car that has lower gas consumption.
Well, if possible, this is also a good choice. To be honest, Japanese and European cars have better MPG (miles per gallon).
Currently, there are many models of hybrid cars which have best MPG. Check www.fueleconomy.gov to compare the efficiency of gas consumption.
