When a dog has puppies or cat has kittens, often times it's hard for family to keep an entire group of animals for the long-term. You have to be careful however in who you give your animals away to however, just because of the potential of abuse or neglect. In this article, I'll share tips on how to detect a good candidate for your animals.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Puppies, kittens, or other domestic baby animals to give away.

Step1
First, if at all possible network with people you know first--friends, relatives, co-workers, etc. Even your veterinarian may know someone who may be looking for a pet. Do this way before the baby animals are born, which will give people who are thinking about it plenty of time to make a decision and prepare for any expenses.
Step2
If you're unable to give away the animals to someone you know, a good filter to use is charging a price for the animals in any advertising that you place. This will greatly increase your chances of someone responding who would actually take care of the animal. (Whether you really do charge the person or not once you interview them is really up to you.)
Step3
Have a list of questions prepared ahead of time to ask people who come to look at the animals. This doesn't have to be a strict list that you read off like a test, but it does help to know a little about the person, their ability to take care of the animal, etc. Like a job interview, it doesn't hurt to ask for references. Most of the time this isn't an issue, but if you get a bad feeling about someone don't let him or her take the animal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never use advertising that says you're giving the animals away for free. I've heard too many horror stories about this. Probably one of the scariest was my grandma's cat had kittens, and she posted them on a bulletin board as free. A guy responded that he wanted to take all of them--for his boa constrictor! Luckily she found out why before he came over, but also you have to factor in the people who wouldn't even tell you the truth. If you can have some sort of filter process such as charging a price, you're better off.
