Here’s how to make a grilled cheese sandwich the old-fashioned way. Hold the onions, please.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 2 slices of bread
  • 1 - 3 slices of cheese
  • butter
  • frying pan
  • spatula

Step1
Place the frying pan on the stove and turn burner to medium heat. Let the pan preheat for a minute or two. Preheating time will vary depending on the kind of stove you have.
Step2
Butter one side of each slice of bread.
Step3
Place one slice of bread in the pan, butter side down.
Step4
Place cheese on top of bread.
Step5
Place second slice of bread on top, butter side up.
Step6
Cook until golden brown. Gently lift the sandwich every couple of minutes with the spatula to make sure you don’t burn the sandwich.
Step7
When the downward facing bread is golden brown, flip the sandwich with a spatula.
Step8
Repeat step 6. When both sides of the bread are golden brown and the cheese is melted in the middle, remove the sandwich from the pan with the spatula and place on plate.
Step9
When sandwich is cool enough to eat, eat it! Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings

  • Steps 3, 4 and 5 should be completed in quick succession.
  • Use any kind of bread and cheese that you like.
  • Add a slice of ham to your sandwich during step 4 for a tasty melt.
  • Wait until the sandwich is sufficiently cooled before eating. There’s nothing worse than burning your taste buds with molten cheese thereby robbing yourself of the ability to taste a cheese sandwich grilled to perfection.
