Discovering you have a gluten allergy is discouraging and can seem overwhelming. Read on for tips on making the transition to Gluten Free (GF) much less painful.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Baking supplies
  • Internet
  • Taste testers
  • An open mind
  1. Step 1

First, don't panic! When you first find out you have a gluten allergy or intolerance, your first thoughts might be "I'll never be able to have _______ again!" This really isn't the case. There are tons of delicious desserts like fudgy brownies, soft cookies and even GF pie shells on the market. And breads that are so tender and moist you won't even miss the wheat.

  2. Step 2

There are a lot of great GF products in supermarkets or natural food stores these days. You can find already prepared items like breads, cereals, frozen dinners, and more in your local grocery store. Many of these products are also available online. A quick search on Google will bring up many results, like the Gluten Free Mall (www.glutenfreemall.com) or Glutenfree.com (www.glutenfree.com). Another option is to make your own foods at home. This isn't hard! Many sites offer free recipes. Check out www.celiac.com, or www.glutenfreegirl.blogspot.com for some incredibly tasty recipes. While making your own food can require some additional baking ingredients to start with, it's really not any more work than baking traditional foods.

  3. Step 3

This third step is probably the most important. Keep an open mind! Make a list of all the foods you CAN still enjoy. Browse the message boards on some of the sites listed above to connect with others who are GF. And most of all, remember that a GF life isn't a life sentence. There's a lot of delicious, nutritious, GF food out there waiting for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • The web is FULL of great GF sites, many which include forums and free recipes!
  • Remember to focus on the foods you CAN still enjoy.
  • Don't forget to keep an open mind.
  • Not all GF foods taste wonderful. Try to sample as many as you can before deciding that GF food is "all gross." Some of it is very tasty.
  • If you think you have a GF allergy or intolerance, you should speak to your doctor. This article is not intended to be used in place of medical advice.
