Step1
Discern whether you need a director at this point in your life. If you feel severely stressed because you don't know how to balance your work and quiet prayer time, then the Lord may be calling you to find a director. If you struggle with difficult conflicts between work requirements and the call to live the Gospel, God may be calling you to find a director. If you have recently experienced a profound deepening of your prayer life, and you feel called to make radical changes in your life, then you the Lord may will for you to have a director. If you are going through a profound testing in your faith life, or if you are haunted by severe doubts in your faith life, then God may be calling you to share that with a spiritual director who can support your through this difficult time. The best way to discern if you are being called to find a director is TO PRAY ERNESTLY FOR A DIRECTOR. If you pray for a director for months or years, and it is God's will for you to have one, He will send one to you. If it is not His will, then you won't find one.
Step2
Find a priest who can hear your confession on a weekly basis, and go at least twice a month. If you are actively working to root out sin and you are able to go weekly, then go weekly. Be very brief and very frank about your sins. Do not excuse them or use the confessional to accuse others. After you know that you have found a priest who you can trust, and after he knows from months of regular confession, ask him for a recommendation for a spiritual director.
Step3
Spiritual director is often given on a monthly or every two months basis. When you make initial contact with a potential director, plan to see that person for two or three visits, and then reassess whether there is a good fit for you.
Step4
When looking for a director, make sure that your prospective director has a spirituality that is in line with the Magisterial Teachings of the Church.
Step5
You may experience some awkwardness in relating to your prospective director. If this occurs do not worry. As long as the guidance you get is in line with Church teaching, and you believe that you can bare your soul to that person, then perservere. Sometimes there is dryness in a relationship between a director and a directee. God can use for your development.
Step6
Pray, pray, and pray some more. When the Lord wants you to have a director, you will!
Step7
When you find a director, ask directly what that person typically receives for a stipend. Some expect a small donation, often of $40. They are people with extensive educational and professional backgrounds, and sometimes the stipends received from spiritual direction aid in funding their ministries. There are, however, directors who live in religious communities who will not expect a stipend. Whether or not you are expected to give a stipend, ALWAYS give your prayers. If the Lord send you a director, then it is a huge blessing. Give thanks to God daily for your spiritual direction, and pray for your spiritual director specifically every day. Pray for the director's apostolic work, personal intentions, and for that person to have strength in living out the faith.
