Growing perennial asparagus is one of the best investments you can make in your vegetable garden. The delicious and highly nutritious vegetable can produce for decades.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Approximately 50 plants ( or crowns ) to produce a plentiful crop for a family of four
  • About 250 square feet of garden area
  • Rotted manure, bone meal and a little potassium
  • Patience!
  1. Step 1

    1. Dig a series of trenches a foot deep and 18 inches wide. The plot will be permanent one, so it is important to prepare properly by removing as many perennial weeds from the bed as possible.

  2. Step 2

    1. Asparagus is a hungry feeder so it is necessary to dig in a lot of fertilizer. Use rotted manure, bone meal and a phosphorus substance in a 6 inch layer to give the roots a healthy start. Purchase roots or "crowns" by mail-order or from a local nursery.

  3. Step 3

    3. Plant the asparagus roots in early spring, in rows about 4 feet between each plant, so that when you work the bed, you do not compact the soil around the plants. Make mounds of light rich soil and drape the roots over the mounds. Fill the trench with soil and firm gently around the roots, covering the tips with about 2 to 3 inches of soil.

  4. Step 4

Keep a newly planted bed watered if it is a dry spring the first year. The following years, it is usually not necessary to water because the roots go down so deep.

Tips & Warnings
  • Now comes the patience needed to enjoy fresh, highly nutritious asparagus from your garden for years to come! The first year will produce small spears that should not be picked, but allowed to grow to full fern-like foliage. The second year of growth in the spring will produce more spears, but do the pick them. Continue to water, if necessary and top dress with compost or manure. Mulch well to control weeds. The third year, pick all the finger -sized ones you want until the weather gets hot and they begin to grow spindly and thin. In the years to come, enjoy the bounty of this gourmet, nutritious, high-end vegetable and reap the benefits of your effort!
