We all know how unpleasant the scent of a skunk can be. If your dog was unfortunately sprayed by one there are ways to remove the odor. Besides just being very unpleasant in scent, it can be very irritating to the eyes of our dog. chances are your dogs face was sprayed first, since he/she was probably trying to sniff the smelly skunk.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
First thing to remember if you just soak your dog in water, the smell will become worse. It has been proven wetting your pet with just water alone worsens the odors the skunk left behind. There are some over the counter mixes you can buy that promise to remove the skunk scent. If you live in an area where you notice a lot of skunks around, you may want to have one of theses products available all the time.
Step2
If you do not want to run to the pet store there are some at home remedies you can try to help remove the nasty scent. First and foremost check your dogs eyes and see if they look irritated. If they do you can use human eye drops in them to help relive the irritation.
Step3
- BEST SKUNK ODOR REMOVAL SOLUTION -

- 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide 2%
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 2 teaspoons liquid soap (Dawn dish-washing soap works best)
Step4
Mix the three ingredients together well. Wet your dog, but hold your nose! Wetting them will make the scent worse! You can place them in the tub if you do not mind the skunk odor in your home for awhile. Otherwise you can bring a bucket of warm water outside to cleanse them. Next you want to work the mixture from the head down and massage it well into his/her fur and making sure you get their skin. Rinse it off your dog well and allow him/her to dry off. You may need to do this twice.
Step5
If you have dog shampoo you can try washing them once or twice with their shampoo and it may help. However the recipe above will work the best. It may dry your dogs skin, but it will remove the skunk odor. You cannot use and conditioning products with this solution since it will interfere with the solution. First you need to remove the skunk odor completely and then in a day or so you can use a conditioning product.
Step6
No matter what you have heard or read about tomato juice it does NOT work! It may help remove a tad bit of the odor, but for some dogs, lighter coats, it may dye their fur. Besides dyeing the fur, it is messy and will only mask the odor but not remove it.
Step7
If your dog was laying on their bedding after he/she got sprayed, you want to wash all their bedding too. You can use the same formula that you used to wash your pet on the bedding and other items with the skunk scent on it. You may want to spot check the items before hand though. If the items can withhold bleach, use it!
Step8
If you have a cat which was sprayed you can use the same solution. Trying to avoid your dog being sprayed by the skunk, is the best thing you can do, for both your noses!
