Proper earthquake preparation is essential in surviving ‘The Big One’. Follow these simple steps meticulously, in order to assure that you will have the best chances at surviving an earthquake.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Get a 5 Gallon Sealable Bucket or bin to store your earthquake survival kit in. You should have one for every 3 or 4 people in the home. Put emergency food and water in the bucket. Use canned goods or boxed goods that will stay good for several years. There should be enough food and water to sustain for at least 3 days per person.
Step2
Keep a few electronic devices in there too. It’s good to have several flashlights or lanterns. You should also have at least one radio. Battery operated equipment is OK, but the batteries can go bad over time. A better option is solar or crank powered electronics. A common item is a solar/hand-crank powered light, radio, and cell phone charger. These combine many applications in a small unit and can prove to be very useful in the event of an earthquake or other emergency.
Step3
Make sure there is at least one first aid kit. This kit should include common medications as well as supplies to treat common minor injuries such as cuts or bumps on the head. Often it is easier and cheaper to purchase these rather than assemble them yourself. Certainly, if you have training in more advanced first aid, you can include the necessary supplies for those applications as well.
Step4
Include any written materials you may find necessary to your families survival of an earthquake as well. See this link for more details.

Step5
If you plan to put this in your car, include and change of clothes and any sanitation or hygienic products which may be necessary to sustain yourself for 3 days or longer.
Step6
Place the earthquake survival kit in a cabinet that is easily accessible and structurally sound. If you have more than one, you can put them in different locations, in case you cannot get to one after the earthquake. If you want to place one in the trunk of the car, use a flat bin as it will take up less room.
