Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
Step1
Gather all the store catalogs and sale flier (do not read them) and put them directly in the trash can or recycling bin. Turn off the home shopping network. Take off shopping sites from your favorites list on your computer and do not visit the sites. If they are not there to temp you, you will not give in. Remember if you have to put a item on a credit card to buy it, the item is no longer a good buy.
Step2
Find other ways to spend your time other then going to the mall or movies. Doing these things are not only sometimes expensive in there self but lead to more nonessential spending.
Step3
Don't by alcohol, cigarettes, or go to bars. I know for the smokers out there this is a tough one. Smoking is a tough habit to break, but if you are having financial issues this may be a choice you may have to make. If you can not or do not want to stop consider cutting down, this in it self may help with cutting some expenses. Think before you drink, at a restaurant or a bar you will pay over $5 for a beer but if you buy them at your local store you can by almost a 6 pack for that. However cutting this expense totally or down to a occasional treat would be more helpful to your budget.
Step4
Buy only essentials. Before going to the grocery store look at in your cabinets to see what's there, try to use what you have before you buy more. For get about buying new gadgets. If you did not need it before, why do you need the gadget now. If you want to buy something that is not essential make it a goal not to get it till the next time you are at the store so you have time to think if you really need it.
Step5
Look at your credit card and bank statements to look for any recurring nonessential fees you are paying. If you are paying for things you do not use or can do without get rid of them. Determine if you really need your cable package or cell phone. (some services will let you suspend services without getting a service fee)
Step6
Don't worry about not giving your kids everything you did not have. Many people say that is how they get into debt. Have family time, instead of getting a new toy. Odds are they have many toys they have never played with in their room.
