How to give a soothing neck massage

Too much weeding, too much computer-time, too much stress. Learn how to rub the pain away with a brief, soothing massage. No spa, no nudity (not even partial!), no appointment--just "aaahhh."

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • chair for your friend
  • table, desk or other flat surface to lean on
  • pillow (optional)
  • your hands
Step1
Instruct your suffering friend to sit, resting his/her head on folded arms or pillow (the old school "put your head down" posture).
Step2
Using gentle-to-moderate pressure, rub neck.
Step3
Since everything's connected, expand rubbing to shoulders (out to tops of arms and down to shoulder blades) and to head (base of skull and behind ears, unless you're disturbing hairdo).
Step4
Finish rubbing by returning to neck. The whole process takes under three minutes. Let "aaahhh" be your guide.

Tips & Warnings

  • A new "patient" may be reassured if you tell him or her this is an old habit in your family.
  • Apply gentle to moderate pressure only. Rubbing your hardest can aggravate muscle conditions you are not aware of and possibly cause further pain.
