1. One option is to stay in extended-stay furnished apartments, condos and houses. They represent the higher cost way to stay for periods of one month or more, but they offer total privacy. Some are run by giant companies like Oakwood and smaller firms, while others are individually-owned units that can be found in directories or on Craigslist in the Sublets/Temp section of the city you are wanting to travel to.
2. A relatively new option is to stay in extended-stay guest houses. These are houses that are hosted by the owner and that offer low-cost stays of one month or more....usually one to four months. They generally cater to singles and sometimes couples.  While not a private as having your own place, you get to meet others from all over the country and world. You share the kitchen and laundry and usually a bathroom, except some have private bathrooms. Complete with WiFi. And like all stays of one month or more there are no transient taxes to pay.
