You can pay top dollar for subscription databases, but there are plenty of free newspaper archives available. Here are some terrific resources for New Jersey.

Titanic, Cranbury Press Take a look at the free online newspaper archives for the Cranbury Press, Cranbury, NJ (see link in resources, below). The collection covers the years 1886-1926, and is made available courtesy of the Cranbury Historical and Preservation Society.
Step2
Ad from 1884 Another free newspaper archive is the Atlantic County, NJ collection. It includes Atlantic City, and covers the period 1860-1923
Step3
Have a Pepsi, 1945 And then there's the Red Bank Register, (Middletown, NJ) 1878-1947. Eventually, there are plans to expand the archive through to 1991.
