Step 1
Start with an understanding of the Craftsman and Victorian elements within the Eastlake style. Eastlake and Victorian styles share an appreciation of detail and ornate design. For some this emphasis on complexity of decorative elements can seem busy or fussy. Others find it fascinating and rich, like a tapestry that needs to be carefully examined to be understood.

Step 2
Know that the Craftsman elements in Eastlake have to do with an appreciation of the human element in a piece--the value of handmade craftsmanship. Wood, that most hand-friendly of materials, is often the primary material in an Eastlake item.
-
Step 3
While Victorian style values deep carvings that play with light and shadow, Eastlake style tends toward more shallow fretwork that creates a slightly more two dimensional effect.
-
Step 4
Stand back from a piece you think might be in the Eastlake style and get a feel for the whole, integrated object. If you can see hints of the finely detailed, almost mosaic look that characterizes Middle Eastern style, you might be looking at a genuine Eastlake piece.

Step 5
Be aware that the Japanese influence in Eastlake is more subtle, but if you can find those elements in the piece, it’s one more indication that it might have Eastlake origins.
