When people have a loss in their family, the cordial thing to do is send a sympathy card. But many people say the wrong things in the cards. This article will show you what to say and what not to say in a sympathy card.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pen
  • Sympathy card from the store or homemade.
  1. Step 1

If you purchase a sympathy card with encouraging words already in it, don't feel that you have to say anything else. Signing your name is enough.

  2. Step 2

If you purchase a card that is blank inside, be very careful of your words especially if you never dealt with the type of loss. Saying I am sorry for your loss and you are in my thoughts and prayers is enough. If you try going on you may say things that will offend or even upset the reader. The point of the card is letting them know you care, not making them feel worse.

  3. Step 3

Saying things like: At least they are in a better place or it's time to move on will definitely shake a person up and they may end up resenting you.

  4. Step 4

In the instance of infant death and if you never have experienced this the worst thing to say is: You're young you can have another one, or at least you got to hold your baby. These words will wound the mother. If you don't know what to say don't say anything. They would rather hear nothing from you than you saying something that may make them feel worse.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's very important that you choose your words carefully, the wrong words can set off the individual who is grieving and this is not good when they are not functioning normally.

on 12/11/2008 It is amazing to me how tactless people can be in some uncomfortable situations. It is always best to keep it short and just let the person know you are there for them if they need you.
