There are three basic types of bleaching trays for whitening teeth—-pre-filled disposable trays, heat molded semi-custom trays and fully custom laboratory-made trays. Here’s a guide to usage and price ranges for bleaching tray systems.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider disposable bleaching trays if you want the least expensive system that also works faster than most systems. Crest White Trays® are pre-filled with a glycerin based gel containing hydrogen peroxide and costs around $35 to $42 for a 14-tray pack.

  2. Step 2

Buy disposable pre-filled bleaching trays at most pharmacies and drug departments. Use the trays once a day for 30 to 45 minutes for five to seven days.

  3. Step 3

Buy a "warm tray" system from an online source to get a semi-custom fitting set of bleaching trays. Warm trays are molded to fit by dipping in hot water to soften them, then pressing them over your teeth. Warm trays cost around $38 to $55 with whitening gel syringes and shipping charges. Warm trays are worn one to three hours daily for one to two weeks.

  4. Step 4
    Molding Tray with Putty

Buy a custom-molded bleaching tray system if you want a more precision fit to your trays. For custom trays, you have to mix a molding putty, press it into molding trays and make bite molds of your upper and lower teeth like the kind the dentist makes. Send the molds back to the laboratory and they send your custom trays in a week or two.

  5. Step 5

Find custom molded bleaching trays on the Internet for prices ranging from $60 to around $120. You can also get custom bleaching tray systems from your dentist, but they will cost more like $300 to $600. You inject a bleaching gel into the front of the trays which contains 16 to 22 percent carbamide peroxide and wear the trays for one hour a day for one to two weeks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Teeth whitening systems only work on natural teeth. They don’t whiten crowns, bridges or composite bonding or fillings. If you have crowns, you probably don’t want to whiten just your natural teeth.
  • More concentrated bleaching gels with 35 to 38 percent carbamide peroxide are available, but they may damage your gums if not used properly.
