How to Make a Hair Scrunchie
A hair scrunchie is an invaluable item if you have hair long enough to tie up. They are easier to deal with than small hair ties, and a nice scrunchie can serve as a fashion accessory in its own right. There isn't an infinite variety of commercially-available scrunchies, though, and if you can't find one that goes well with a particular outfit, you can make your own as a quick craft project.
Things You'll Need
- Stretchy knit fabric
- 5 inches elastic banding
- Iron
- Safety pins
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Sewing needle

1
Cut a 3 1/2-by-14-inch rectangle of knit fabric. Make sure the fabric does not stretch as you measure and cut it.
-
2
Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. If the fabric is printed and has a "right" and "wrong" side, fold it so that the print is on the inside.
-
-
3
Sew the edges of the fabric together where they meet opposite the fold. Use a tight running stitch (straight line) on the sewing machine. This will form a hollow tube.
-
4
Turn the fabric tube inside-out, placing the hems on the inside.
-
5
Fold ¼-inch of the ends of the fabric tube inward. Iron the ends so that the folds stay in place on their own, giving the tube neatly rolled ends.
-
6
Thread the length of elastic into the fabric tube. Safety pin it in place at one end of the tube.
-
7
Bunch up the fabric around the pinned end of the elastic. Bring the opposite end of the elastic piece in line with the opposite end of the tube.
-
8
Hand stitch the elastic into place at either end of the tube. Use at least 30 stitches on each side for security.
-
9
Bring the ends of the fabric tube around to join each other. Hand sew the ends of the elastic together. Sew the folded ends of the fabric together all the way around, using a whip stitch.
