Things You’ll Need:
- Patience
- Awareness
- Decent Swimming Skills
Step1
If you find yourself getting swept out and are unable to make it in do not panic. Rip Currents consist of brown murky water caused by sand getting thrown about. You should also notice white tips on the top of small waves around you.
Step2
Once you realize that your in a rip, reference yourself to the shoreline. Determine which way the rip is carrying you. If there is a lifeguard on the beach signal them by waving your hands and yelling/whistling.
Step3
Swim in the opposite direction in which the rip is traveling.
Step4
Once you are released, take your time getting into shore. If you're tired, take a break. If your on a boogey board, stay on it and kick, don't get off and try to swim.

on 5/12/2008 Not sure about Tip 3 here - I think the best advice is to swim parallel to shore and get out of the rip current SIDEWAYS, before returning to the beach. You should never swim against a rip current.
