In online documents, you can refer viewers to another location in the same document, another document, or a webpage url. Placing url links directly in FrameMaker documents makes less work for you after your documents are converted to PDF files.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Frame-Maker

Step1
Creating links to URLs is a two-step process: making the linked text visually different and creating the link in hypertext command central.
Step2
It's a good idea to create a new Character Format that you can assign to hypertext links in text. Be consistent with colors and styles (i.e. blue and underline).

After you have a Character Format you like, just select the text you plan to use as a hypertext link, and apply the Character Format to selected text.
Step3
Now you are ready to insert a hypertext command.

A. Click one time within a text area in which you want to insert hypertext.

B. Select Special, Hypertext.
The Hypertext window is displayed.

C. Select Go to URL from the Command pull-down menu.
"message URL" is inserted in the Syntax field.
Step4
D. Type the URL you want to use as the link destination.

For example, if you want to link to www.ehow.com, the syntax looks like this: "message URL http://www.ehow.com."

E. Check Validate Command Upon Insertion to troubleshoot errors on the spot.

F. Click Edit Hypertext Marker to insert the hypertext command.
The Hypertext window remains open.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you forget to apply a Character Format before you insert the hypertext link, you can always apply the Character format to text afterward.
  • If you want to spot-test the new hypertext command, click the Make View-Only button in the Hypertext Window. This command is the same as if you used Esc Flk to toggle between View-Only and Editable. When you have finished, click Make Editable in the Hypertext Window to switch back to an editable FrameMaker document.
