Step 1
If the business is other than a sole proprietorship utilizing your social security number, you will need to obtain an employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS. It’s free.

Register your company with the Secretary of State (for your state). Your company will be given an identification number to be to obtain other state and local licenses.

Using the EIN and the Secretary of State ID, obtain a sales tax number from your state. You may also need to file for a city/county business license.

If you intend to have employees, you will need to register with your state employment commission.

Most businesses utilize a name other than the owner’s legal name. This is called “doing business as” (DBA) or an assumed name. You will need to file a local form indicating the business name if other than your legal name. The cost is usually under $20. Some cities or counties require the owner to submit to a local newspaper and announce the business name.

Step 6
Other licenses and permits include the following (depending on type and location of business): food permits from the health department, zoning permit, alcohol and beverage permit, environmental protection filing (painters, landscapers, cleaners, and others) and contact the fire department for fire inspection.
