For many, retirement is a dramatic life transition etched in total freedom, where the individual is able to travel, relax, read, garden, eat out and just enjoy the simple things in life. However for some, retirement does not come easy. Many people have a hard time letting go of the routines they have followed for many years, even though they should be elated at the prospect of being free from all the obligations of a daily job. Here are some tips to use this liberating phase to begin a new and exciting time in your life.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Mentally prepare for things will change permanently and be ready for a new handle on life. Start focusing on new horizons to be met and conquered; remember this is not the end of your life, only a new beginning. Buy a journal to record plans for things you always wanted to accomplish but could not because you were working.

  2. Step 2

Take your time moving forward, relax a little bit and enjoy the peacefulness of your own home and family. Begin a good health, diet and nutrition plan. Buy some new clothes and keep yourself spiffy and sharp for fun times and new friendships.

  3. Step 3

It is normal for retirees to have many emotional difficulties during this difficult phase, but you can keep your mind sharp by writing and recording your emotions. Play mentally challenging games that stimulate the brain such as crossword puzzles, chess, checkers, card games, or computer games. Make a list of places in your journal you would like to visit and plan a vacation out of the state or to another country.

  4. Step 4

Play sports, tennis, golf, bowling and other physical activities to get much needed exercise. Concentrate on helping and serving others and less on yourself. This task will always keep you busy. Join clubs and organizations where other seniors congregate and do not forget to make new friends, both older and younger than you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Shift your focus to positive things and issues.

  • Prepare, plan, and implement your travels to learn about different cultures.
  • Explore new territory every day and learn something you did not already know about.

  • Avoid depression, negative people and situations.
