Children may feel that writing is a boring endeavor. However, writing does not have to be boring. You can make writing fun and exciting for any young child. Introduce the task of journaling to your child, while building a child’s self-esteem and creativeness. You can help them develop a stronger grasp of English composition and build their word vocabulary. Here are some excellent strategies to help your child see writing as a fun and exciting adventure.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A quiet room or space in which they can have little distractions
  • A big, colorful, fun-looking journal
  • Plenty of pens
  • Crayola crayons
  • Colorful magic markers
  • Scissors
  • Colored paper
  • Glue sticks
  • Stamp markers

Step1
Take your child with you to the nearest craft shop and let them choose their own journal or notebook and accessories. By doing this, you create a sense of excitement in your child because they have special place and items to work with. They can choose favorite characters, colors, fabrics, or pictures on their journals.
Step2
Explain to your child that they can create a memory book, photo book, travel notebook or a daily journal to write in everyday. They can begin with a humorous adventure they had while traveling, playing with friends, and eating with siblings or any other funny incident that made them laugh. Let them tell their story with pictures and drawings.
Step3
Have them use the crayons or markers to draw a story about their adventures. Encourage them to write about their emotions and how they felt when the incidents took place. Were they happy, laughing, excited, nervous, or sad? Ask them what sounds or smells did they experience at the time.
Step4
Keep their creative juices flowing and help them cut, paste or stamp characters, flowers, pictures, symbols and art to their drawings. Allow them to use their imagination to design and write on each page in their journal. Use subjects that inspire children the most such as insects, animals, flowers, cartoon characters, and food.
Step5
Create greeting cards, ornaments, place settings, bookmarkers and more with their journal. Teach them to write words of encouragement to others for get-well wishes, thank you notes, baby showers, weddings, holidays and other inspiring thoughts on paper.
Step6
Encourage the child to use the journal like a daily diary. Remind them to use the journal for all types of events and holidays. Keep a stock of additional fun accessories for them to design with. Always allow them to choose their own accessories so the motivation continues.
Make each page they design a special occasion for them to write.
