Would like to refinish your hardwood floors yourself? Try this method.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ready Strip Deck Stripper
  • Sander
  • Plastic Scraper
  • Garden Sprayer
  • Stain
  • Polyurethane
  • Applicator/Brush
  • Scouring Pad
  • Vapor Mask
  1. Step 1

Sweep and mop your floors clean.

  2. Step 2

Using a garden sprayer, apply Ready Strip Deck Stripper to section of the floor.

  3. Step 3

Let the stripper work for the recommended time. This chemical stripper will melt away the old finish and actually remove stains.

  4. Step 4

Next using a large plastic chemical resistant scraper, begin scrapping the finish off of the floor.

  5. Step 5

Next use a spray bottle to spray water onto the surface and use a scouring pad to remove any left over residue and stain. Wipe the area with a damp rag.

Now move on to another section of the floor and repeat the previous steps until the entire floor is free of the old finish and stain.

  6. Step 6

Allow floors to dry. Water raises the grain of the wood so lightly sand the entire floor with a fine sand paper.

  7. Step 7

Vacuum or sweep up dust and use a rag slightly dampened with mineral spirits to remove remaining dust.

  8. Step 8

Finally apply a stain and finish using a brush or applicator pad.

Wear a hairnet to prevent any hair from fall to the floor.

  9. Step 9

Great we're done! Any self starter should have no problem doing this job.

The materials are fairly inexpensive and with a little patience you will have a quality floor you can be proud to show.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use proper ventilation when working. Use a vapor mask, goggles and chemical resistant gloves when working with a chemical stripper.
