Spring is a time for you and your family to get outdoors, do a little yard work, plant flowers and gardens and a fun time for children to get out in the warm fresh air after having been cooped up indoors during the winter. But there are things to look out for and be aware of to make your outdoor time safe.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Make sure fertilizers, insect sprays and mosquito repellents, weed killers and a variety of other household and lawn chemicals are kept in locked cabinets well out of the reach of children and that the garage is kept locked.
Step2
Make sure rakes are not left outdoors. If you have to lie one down for a moment or two make sure the prongs are placed downward to the ground.
Step3
Make sure hand, gas and electric operated lawn tools are hung high on a garage wall well out of the reach of children and, once again, make sure the garage is locked.
Step4
Try and find fertilizers and weed killers for your lawn that are safe for children to play on. If there is a time constraint when children are to be kept off the grass make sure you follow the guidelines for their safety.
Step5
Make sure children have shoes on so that chemical or powered residue does not get into the pores of their feet and hands.
Step6
Make sure your children are nowhere in the area to assure they do not breathe in any fumes when using sprays and other chemicals on your lawn or garden.
Step7
Inspect any bushes around your house or lawn, the eaves of the garage, tree or playhouses, unused gas lamps in yards and your house for wasp or mud dauber nests, disposing of any you find.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can purchase child sized plastic lawn tools including rakes, hoes, plant watering containers and shovels. This way they can participate with less temptation to use the more dangerous adult lawn and garden tools.
