Producing any type of movie is extremely difficult due to the immense number of responsibilities that often go unnoticed by the general public. Despite this, movies are not made without capable producers to do the dirty work in arranging everything, ensuring the director will turn his vision into reality. This tutorial will deal with producing independent and low-budget films.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computers
  • Spreadsheet knowledge
  • Ability to negotiate
  • Research skills

Step1
Get the money! Movies cannot be made without money. As obvious as that sounds you might be surprised at how many people underestimate ancillary costs such as food, transportation and lodging.
Step2
With an independent movie, odds are you already have a director. Start the crewing process with him.
Step3
Before enlisting outside help, see if the director has anybody specific in mind. Chemistry is key on set and those familiar with the director are more likely to have chemistry from the get-go.
Step4
Once crewing is complete, work with the director to cast the film. Though there may be arguments with the director, make sure you do what is best for the film. That can either be vetoing a directorial decision or agreeing with the decision to ensure harmony.
Step5
Work out the lodgings for all cast and crew. With low-budget films this usually consists of a few members of the crew housing everyone.
Step6
Secure all equipment. Make sure to look for deals. Due to your renting a wide array of equipment for a long period of time, most rental houses will offer deals wherein you pay for three days but rent for eight.
Step7
Food is arguably the most important part of film production as I discuss in a separate article. The bottom line is: the better the food, the more interested the crew will be in working.
