How to Have a Picture Perfect Lawn without the Backache

We all do it, every year we make that commitment to have a great lawn with plush green grass and every year you end up breaking your back once the weeds set in. There is a way to have a lush lawn and minimal turf care without a lawn service or laying new sod.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
If you want the lazy man’s way out you have come to the right place. It is not that I am lazy by nature but would rather spend more time trimming my bushes and planting new flowers then breaking my back for a yard that looks so good it has to be synthetic.
Step2
Start with the knowledge of growing cycles. Take a look out your window right now and realize that every weed is so noticeable because it is taller. Why, you ask? Because they grow faster then any grass seed out there. With this in mind you can start your battle.
Step3
You will need a lawn fertilizer. Any kind will do but I have found that Miracle Grow and Scotts work the best. It needs to be for turf or lawn building. It should not have any type of weed control or other weed treatment in it. Remember we are taking the easy way out and are done trying to control them.
Step4
Treat you lawn once a week for a minimum of six weeks making sure to get the fertilizer spread evenly. Water in times of dry spells to keep it going between weekly treatments. You should notice your whole yard start to spring to life and even the weeds will start a huge growth spurt. This is the trick because they are the fastest growing they will outgrow their root system and die off in a short time. Once this happens your grass will take over growing tall and lush.
Step5
The problem is not gone but rather the weed seeds are dormant. To keep them this way, continue to water your lawn when it is dry. Also when using your lawn mower set the deck to three inches. Any lower and you risk those dormant weed seeds getting what they need to spring back to life. This will keep your yard going all season long and you will need to start over in the next spring. By starting early it allows enough time for things to jump to life before summer hits.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the labels of the fertilizer to ensure proper distribution.
  • Keep fertilizer stored high out of the reach of children and family pets.
