Sometimes when climbing you'll find you need to tie an overhand knot somewhere in the middle of the rope. This is called an overhand on a bight. A knot on a bight simply means you bend the rope and tie both strands of the rope in the regular fashion. An overhand on a bight is often used to haul bags or gear up a route.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Bend the rope in the spot where you want the knot.

  2. Step 2

Pinch the bend and fold the two strands of rope back so they are parallel and touching.

  3. Step 3

Imagine the two strands to be one cord.

  4. Step 4

Tie an overhand knot as usual. There should now be a loop in the rope.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try not to let the two strands confuse you. The knot is executed in the exact same way as a regular overhand knot.
  • An overhand on a bight is an excellent knot for hauling bags or gear, but should not be used for climbing. If a climber needs to tie-in to the middle of the rope, she should use a figure-eight on a bight.
