How to Tie an Overhand Knot for Climbing

One of the most basic and useful knots is the overhand knot. Everyone from housewives to mountain climbers use this knot, so doing it correctly is important and sometimes critical.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Climbing rope
  1. Step 1

    Hold the rope in a straight horizontal line.

  2. Step 2

    Bend it in two pieces where you want the knot to be.

  3. Step 3

    Cross one end over the other to create an X with a loop.

  4. Step 4

    Wrap one leg of the X behind the other, using the other hand to keep the loop open.

  5. Step 5

    Pull the end through the loop from the back to the front.

  6. Step 6

    Continue to pull to tighten the knot.
