Elvis Presley's "Peanut Butter and Nanner" Sandwich

Peanut butter sandwiches served with a mixture of other condiments from jelly and honey to marshmallow fluff and Nutella are a staple for kids and teenagers. Elvis Presley was a big fan of the peanut butter sandwich and his obsession was a variation of it. The famous "fried peanut butter and nanner" sandwich served on white bread was a favorite of the King's. It is said that he ate up to 12 sandwiches per sitting. Here's how to create your own peanut butter and banana sandwich the way Elvis had it. Beware, at 32 grams of fat per sandwich, this isn't exactly a healthy snack.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 banana (medium)
  • 4 tbsp. peanut butter (more or less according to preference)
  • 2 slices of white bread (you can use wheat if you prefer)
  • 2 tbsp. butter
  1. Step 1

In a small bowl, mash the banana with the back of a fork. Set aside.

  2. Step 2

Heat a skillet on the stove over very low heat. You can turn this on just before you make the sandwich, to allow the skillet to heat slowly. Grilled sandwiches cook better over very low heat.

  3. Step 3

Take one slice of white bread (you can use wheat, but Elvis liked his sandwiches on white bread) and smear it with the mashed banana.

  4. Step 4

Take another slice of bread and smear it with peanut butter. Put the two slices together to form a sandwich. Lightly butter one side of the sandwich and place into the skillet.

  5. Step 5

While the first side is grilling, butter the side that is still facing up in order to prepare for when you flip it.

  6. Step 6

Check the side that is grilling by lifting it slightly with a spatula. Depending on the heat, this could take between 2 and 5 minutes. Remember that slower is better, but be careful not to burn the sandwich. When the first side is golden brown, flip it and grill the other side.

  7. Step 7

    Cut lengthwise and serve immediately.

Tips & Warnings
  • Grill the sandwich slowly, over low heat.
  • Be careful not to burn the bread when grilling.
