How to Build a Writing Portfolio

If you’re interested in turning your love of words into a new career, you’ll need to work on building a writing portfolio. Building a writing portfolio when you have no professional work experience may seem like a challenging task, but it can be done.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Be realistic. While you might not be able to break into Time or Better Homes & Gardens on your first try, getting published in your local newspaper is a reasonable goal for a new writer. Start small, then work your way up.
Step2
Start a blog. There are many free blog hosts and using a template means you won’t need to have any web design skills. You can write about anything you want, as long as the quality of your work makes it something you’d be willing to show a prospective employer. Writing everyday will also help you develop the discipline you need to succeed.
Step3
Volunteer your services. There are many wonderful non-profit organizations that could use someone to write websites, prepare brochures, publish newsletters, secure grants, etc. Whether you’re interested in saving animals or helping children learn to read, you’ll be able to build your portfolio while making a difference.
Step4
Enter writing contests. Contests give you feedback on your work, as well as a chance to win savings bonds, theater tickets, cash, trophies, and other miscellaneous prizes. It’s a great way to build your confidence as well.
Step5
Don’t take rejection personally. Even experienced writers get turned down on a regular basis. A rejection doesn’t necessarily mean your work is no good. It could simply mean the piece isn’t a good fit for one particular market. Revise as necessary, then try again!

Tips & Warnings

  • Regardless of where you decide to begin building your writing portfolio, always remember to give every project your best effort. As a writer, your reputation is everything. Don’t allow poor quality work to come back and haunt you!

on 4/14/2008 Good article. Another idea is to contact local free community papers and offer to write for them?
