Collecting can be a fun hobby but done incorrectly can turn the collection into an assortment of trinkets with no place to put them. In trying to decide what to collect, follow these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Determining why you want to collect can narrow down your options. If the intention is to build a collection that you can leave to your kids or family or pass it on from generation to generation then you have to consider collecting something that can be preserved throughout the years. If you want to build a collection as an investment so you can prosper later, you may need to collect something that increases in value as time goes by. If you want to show your collection to people on a regular basis you may have to collect something that you can wear, such as watches. You may want to collect something that contains a piece of history. If so, you could collect maps or books or coins and stamps or war artifacts. You may want to build a collection with your spouse hoping your bond will be stronger. If so, you could decide to collect something from places you travel together to, such as wine stoppers or spoons. You may want to collect simply because you like the item of your collection, such as ceramic figurines. As you can see there are many options but it all depends on the reason for collecting. So the first step is to find out why you want to start a collection.
Step2
The second step is to determine where you would store your collection. Depending on what you decide to collect you may need a lot of room or you may need a special place that will help preserve the items you are collecting. If you decide to collect valuable items, such as baseball cards, you may need to consider a safe deposit box a the bank.
Step3
Start collecting by visiting garage sales, looking for the items while traveling, or researching on the internet and eBay.
