If you have ever needed to know how to write a College Admissions Essay this guide is an easy way to learn how. Written by a former English teacher, the process is explained in full detail and is designed to help you achieve your goal of being accepted into the college you desire.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • You intended major
  • Your accomplishments and grades
  • Letters of professional or volunteer supervisors/references
  1. Step 1

First, consider the topic. Usually it has to do with why you want to get into ____ college, or how to you think you would be an asset to ______ college. Since these are the most common topics, we will focus on them; however, this process will work with other topics you may be given by your prospective college.

  2. Step 2

Next, assemble all of the reasons why you want to go to this school and rank them. Flattery, combined with a strong background on your part will get your essay to the top of the pile. If you are going to a particular college, say like the College of Pharmacy, make sure the top reason that you state why you wish to go to the college is because you know that ____ (insert college’s name) College has one of the best _______ (insert discipline) programs in the nation and if you are determined to be the best _____ (insert occupation), you wish to lean from the top _____ (insert discipline) College in the U.S.

  3. Step 3

Now, back up with your academic record, why you would be a good fit for the school. If you are majoring in a science-based career, emphasize your strengths in the subject area, and make sure you include any summer internships, school clubs, gifted programs, or other areas of achievement you participated in that directly related to that subject area. Don’t worry if you are not majoring in science, this same premise holds true to students who plan to major in other subject areas.

  4. Step 4

When it comes time for references, make sure you try to get letters of reference or recommendation from professionals in the field you wish to major. While it may seem hard, talk to everyone you know and inform them about your career goals. Remember to think outside of the box: doctors, dentists, coaches, your specific subject teacher (that you wish to major in), pastors, and other respected people in that community.

  5. Step 5

Finally, ask someone to look over your College Admissions Essay before it is submitted. Consider asking your school’s Guidance Counselor or your English Teacher (or for Graduate Students seek advice from an English Professor or the college’s English Lab) to review the essay you wrote and provide an honest opinion. When you are ready to submit, make sure to copy your submission of the entire application packet in case it is lost in the mail.
