Step1
Wash feet thoroughly each day. More often if odor is a problem. Use a nailbrush on toenails. Rinse well, then dry thoroughly, being certain to dry the area between toes. After drying feet, inspect for cuts and blisters, sores, redness, or dryness, tenderness or loss of sensation. Apply an antifungal when necessary. If fungal infection persists, see your doctor.
Step2
When needed, trim toenails straight across. Do not cut too short, cut out, or dig at corners. Smooth nails with an emery board or nail file using special care near the corners of the nail. Paint toenails with a pretty polish if desired!
Step3
If corns or calluses are a problem, see your physician for advice or treatment. Do not trim or shave corns or calluses yourself. Do not use over-the-counter treatments unless directed by your physician.
Step4
Wear clean comfortable and well fitting socks. Those made of white cotton, or other breathable materials are preferred for every day use. Thick, soft socks help draw moisture away from the feet. Change socks daily or more often if odor or sweaty feet are a problem. Use foot powder or cornstarch each time you change your socks. Alternately, try a natural antiperspirant that contains sage or coriander.
Step5
As there are no oil glands on the sole of our feet, there is a tendency for them to dry and crack. Use moisturizer each day on these areas. One night a week, try applying a generous amount of lotion to feet, add cotton socks and wear to bed.
Step6
Wear shoes that fit well. Choose leather, canvas or other breathable materials, while avoiding plastic and any other nonporous materials. Have feet measured often (while standing) when buying shoes. Feet change size and shape as we age. Avoid wearing the same shoes each day to allow them to air and dry out. Replace your shoes every 6 months or as they become worn.
Step7
To make an exquisitely soothing footbath, fill a plastic tub with pretty marbles or florist’s marbles. Add bath salts and/or essentials oil and warm water. Soak feet, rolling and pushing them gently over the marbles. Give feet a workout by picking up the marbles with your toes and the dropping them back in to the water.
Step8
Indulge yourself in a foot massage on occasion, adding a few drops of peppermint, or your favorite essential oil to the lotion or massage oil to add additional relaxing benefits.
Step9
If finances allow, pamper yourself with an occasional professional pedicure. Enjoy showing off your lovely feet!
