How to Make Homemade Fingerpaint

Arts & crafts builds children's creativity, stimulates their imaginations, and enhances cognitive skills. Finger painting is a fun early childhood activity! Enjoy!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups cold water
  • food coloring
  • Medium saucepan
  • Spoon
  • Storage containers, baby food jars, or ice cube trays
  1. Step 1

    Gather all of the ingredients, pan, and spoon.

  2. Step 2

    Measure out and mix the cornstarch, sugar, salt, and cold water together in the pan.

  3. Step 3

    Cook and Stir over low heat for 10-15 minutes.

  4. Step 4

    Keep stirring the mixture until it is smooth and and has a thick consistency.

  5. Step 5

    When the finger paint has thickened take the pan off the stove and let the mixture cool.

  6. Step 6

    Separate the finger paint mixture into an ice cube tray, baby food jars , or other storage containers.

  7. Step 7

    Add a few drops of food coloring to each container to create the desired amount of colors you would like.

  8. Step 8

    Stir each section of paint to the desired color.

  9. Step 9

    Give to children to enjoy! Let their creativity flow!

Tips & Warnings
  • Instead of asking the children what their painting is, say "Tell me about it." This will avoid hurt feels if you can't tell what it is.
  • Be sure to cover the table with newspaper or plastic tablecloth.
  • Be sure children are wearing old clothing or smocks.
  • The paintings make great gifts for grandparents, aunts and uncles, baby-sitters, etc.

on 4/10/2008 This is such a simple, fun idea that it makes me want to make some fingerpaints for myself! I have a recipe for homemade play dough that is exactly like the stuff you get in stores. I bet your fingerpaints are even better!
