Step1
Hi,
I would like to make some notes to Paul M. J. Suchecki’s “How to Get Your Computer to Boot Faster” article.
Step2
Never use the usual „Delete” option but download and use the Eraser (www.heidi.ie). It’s a freeware bee. When you install the program, it will work both from your right click and from the Start Menu. You'll don't need it in your startup programs list. UNCHECK it from your MSCONFIG list (after the "apply" the PC must be rebooted). When you need to erase anything, use it from your right click. For important files use the Higher passes (7 or 35), for less important files use the pseudorandom option (1 pass). Why I propose this? Because when you delete any files by the usual method, their copycat/imprint will be stored on that app. 1-1.6 GB space on your hard drive, which is always uphold after your very first OS installation. Its called the black partition, which is used by few companies for storage (it stores your files, which could be by the appropriate programs and method easily viewed and copied; and it has a share in doing the virtual space sharing if some big or smaller but „important” companies need, let’s say, additional CPU for their PCs free of charge). So, when you’re online that space could be utilized…
Step3
If you’re browsing the Net every day in many hours, I propose to erase manually the contents in the Temporary Internet folder (c:documents and settings/’your name’/local settings/Content.IE5/*.*)) & of the Temp folder (which locates before the Temporary Internet folder in - c:documents and settings/’your name’/local settings/Temp) every 24 hours or at the end of your work if you go to bed, even if you don’t switch off the PC & do all that in SAFE MODE.
SAFE MODE for XP: restart your PC – then press F8 – chose „Safe Mode” – sign-up as Administrator (in most cases your name will appear too under the Admin mode; DON’T choose your name!) - choose ’YES’ for the pop-up window.
Step4
NEVER BE ONLINE WHEN YOU PLAN TO ERASE/WIPE ANYTHING!!!
NEVER BE ONLINE WHEN YOU RESTART YOUR PC AND/OR YOU’RE IN SAFE MODE! NEVER!!! UNPLUG THE CABLES.
Step5
We are still in SAFE MODE and are logged in as ADMINISTRATOR:
In the same directory (’your name’) open the Application Data folder then the Cookies folder and manually erase ALL its content: (C:Documents and Settings/’your name’/Application Data/Cookies)
IMPORTANT: in the mentioned folders, erase all files!!! Some of them will be re-generated (annulled their contents) by the OS again. Don’t Panic but erase only where & what I mentioned!!!
Step6
WHY to erase the contents of those folder’s manually? Because when you clear with the programs’ given module (Delete), in many cases the path in the OS’s Registry will not be cleared at all. It’s a built-in illusory step/ramp of the software maker. If at the other hand you do that manually, you will erase the files really. Another reason is that you’re monitored by different Government, Semi-Government Agencies, Marketing Agencies, Spies of different Nations, by different Hackers, by the Webmasters in 24 hours. By using the suggested tasks you’ll make things warm for those people and their programs, and, above all, you’ll „unburden” your PCs’ work.
Step7
IMPORTANT: when you buy a new PC or re-install the OS, always use the Eraser’s Nuke Boot option to make a complete erase before you’ll install the OS. To make a Nuke Boot Disc on CD or USB or 1.4 inch Floppy:
- in case of new PC or first OS installation use another computer to download the software and to make the Nuke Boot floppy or CD or USB, always go to the (www.heidi.ie) and read the users manual;
- in case if re-installation needs to be done, download the program from the page, install it on the old/existing OS and make the floppy or CD or on USB, and then use it for wiping the data
Step8
if you use IE 6 or 7, the following steps should be done:
Turn Off the Phishing Filter (but manually you’ll be able to check the websites still); this module uses all of your CPU!
In the Internet Options:
Set the Home Page to Blank (don’t let anybody to find your browser when you connect to the Net).
Set the Security to Medium-High.
In the Privacy Turn on Pop-Up blocker; Filter level to Medium or High.
In the Content open the AutoComplete’s Settings and uncheck all options with the next method: first Check the “User Names and Passwords on Forms” then uncheck the “Prompt me to save passwords”, which locates under the before mentioned option; then uncheck the “User Names and Passwords on Forms”.
Then uncheck all the rest and click OK then APPLY
...at the end click “APPLY”
Step9
if you use Mozilla Firefox, the following steps should be done:
In the Internet Options:
In the Main window for Startup set the “Show a blank window”.
In the Content window CHECK “Block pop-up windows”.
In the Privacy window in the Cookies option CHECK the “Accept cookies from sites” and Keep Until “I Close Firefox”; in the Private Data option UNCHECK the “Always clear my private data when I close Firefox” and CHECK the “Ask me before clearing private data”.
In the Security window CHECK the “Warn me when sites try to install add-ons” and CHECK the “Tell if the site I’m visiting is a suspected forgery” with “Check using a downloaded list of suspected sites”; UNCHECK the Passwords options; in the Warning Messages’ Settings options CHECK the “I’m about to view a page that uses low-trade encryption” only
in the Advanced window in the Network options set the Cache space on 1 MB.
The rest is up to you.
Step10
For all the above mentioned, you definitely must have an Internet Security program. I use/purchased the Kaspersky Internet Security all-in-one software (KIS). They are Russians. Why this program? Check their feedback on the Net or go to their website www.kaspersky.com. You can use Paypal to purchase their products online. If somebody have or decides to buy this software, I can send my setting file of the KIS’s Configuration Manager as the program has many modules, which in most cases are offered by other internet security service companies separately. The second reason that KIS’s Firewall module has a Training Mode whet the KIS asks the user, and offers options to be allowed or deny or teminate or add to trusted sites by the user for every single connection. Who knows which connection does what? I know but it would be very long to write down everything. If you’re an every day Net user, the company’s basic setting isn’t enough. I have optimized the penetration to my system on almost zero level. So, I chose the easiest way, and that is to send my Configuration Manager settings file if you need. The bench is that the OS will operate even if you set the KIS’s Firewall on High Security but if you install a new program that uses online update, you must use Training Mode to allow the access but only for that program. When you’re online, the Program’s Icon and the Program’s name always appear in the KIS’s modules drop-up window during the connection requests.
Similar to the KIS is the G DATA. They are Germans but develop modules together with Kaspersky. It’s up to you to choose.
Step11
Another useful suggestion: Download and use weekly the Spybot freeware security software (www.spybot.info). The updates for this program are launched every Thursday.
All of my mentioned programs work with Microsoft’s OSs without incompatibility.
