A mei tai baby carrier is an Asian-inspired carrier that allows you to wear your baby or toddler on your front, back or hip. While it may look like a complicated tangle of straps, a mei tai baby carrier is actually incredibly easy to use once you get the hang of it.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mei tai baby carrier
  • Baby
  • Friend (to spot you)

    Front-Carry Position

  1. Step 1

Position the body of the carrier in front of your body and tie the short straps snugly around your waist (behind your back) using a square knot.

  2. Step 2

Pick your baby up and position her so she is facing toward you with her legs wrapped around your waist, supporting her with one hand. This is a good point to have a friend on hand to spot you while you learn how to use the carrier in this position.

  3. Step 3

Grab the carrier with your free hand (continue supporting your baby with your other hand) and bring it the body of the carrier up so that it covers your baby’s back. Make sure his legs are comfortably sticking out the sides of the carrier.

  4. Step 4

Place both straps over your shoulders, and while still supporting your baby, make sure the body of the carrier lays smooth against your baby to ensure her comfort.

  5. Step 5

Grab both straps with one hand (continue supporting the baby with your other hand) and pull them tight behind your back. Now that the baby’s weight is secured by holding the straps, you can reach your other hand behind your back to grab one of the straps. You should now have a strap in each hand, held tight to support your baby.

  6. Step 6

Cross the straps at your back, bring them around the front to wrap them around your baby’s back (or underneath his bottom), then tie them behind your back using a square knot.

  7. Hip-Carry Position

  8. Step 1

Position the body of the carrier on your hip and tie the short straps snugly around your waist (on the opposite side) using a square knot.

  9. Step 2

Pick your baby up and position her so she is facing toward your side with his legs wrapped around your waist, supporting her with one hand. This is a good point to have a friend on hand to spot you while you learn how to use the carrier in this position.

  10. Step 3

Grab the carrier with your free hand (continue supporting your baby with your other hand) and bring it the body of the carrier up so that it covers your baby’s back. Make sure his legs are comfortably sticking out the sides of the carrier.

  11. Step 4

Place the front strap over the opposite shoulder while still supporting your baby. Make sure the body of the carrier lays smooth against your baby to ensure her comfort.

  12. Step 5

Grab the other strap, position it under your baby’s arm and pull it tight. Bring the back strap across the front of your body to meet up with the front strap (that is pulled tight over your shoulder and crossing your back) and tie them under your baby’s bottom but above his legs using a square knot.

  13. Back-Carry Position

  14. Step 1

Position the body of the carrier at your back and tie the short straps snugly around the front of your waist using a square knot.

  15. Step 2

Place your baby on your hip, then lean over and carefully slide her around and onto your back, supporting her with both hands. Ask a friend to help you learn this position until you are confident you can safely do it on your own.

  16. Step 3

Continue to lean over, supporting your baby with one hand, and use your other hand to bring the body of the carrier up over your baby’s back. Make sure his legs are comfortably sticking out the sides of the carrier.

  17. Step 4

Hold the straps with a firm grip, then stand up. You may want to gently bounce your baby into the carrier to secure her in the carrier.

  18. Step 5

Pull the straps tight and cross them over your chest. Wrap the straps around your baby’s back then tie them in front of your body using a square knot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always check your baby’s position in the carrier using a mirror to ensure that she is safe, secure and properly positioned in the carrier.
  • Do not attempt to learn these carrier positions alone. Always ask another adult to help you learn how to use the carrier and to spot you as you learn how to place your baby in each position.
  • Keeping your baby safe is your personal responsibility. Use these instructions with caution at all times.

on 5/27/2008 I would love to see some photographs for this article. I'm not sure if this is the name of the carrier for which I am looking.
