How to Keep Your Keyboard Clean

If you’ve ever eaten your lunch at your desk or grabbed a snack while checking your email at home, you know how tough it is to keep your keyboard clean. Most people try to clean their computer keyboards every few months in a vain attempt to remove those crumbs that fell between the keys and the dirt that has accumulated on the keys themselves. It’s far easier, though, to simply avoid the problem altogether by keeping your keyboard clean in the first place. Follow these few simple steps and your keyboard will be free of crumbs, splotches and dirt smudges in no time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cotton swabs
  • Rubbing alcohol or other cleaning fluid
  • Compressed air
  • Vacuum with hose

Step1
Turn off your computer and unplug the keyboard from the unit.
Step2
Remove any debris from between the keys by spraying the keyboard with compressed air and vacuuming between the keys.
Step3
Place a few drops of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and gently clean the top and sides of each key. You’ll want to do this every month.
Step4
Purchase a form-fitting keyboard cover for your keyboard. A good-quality cover will protect your keyboard from dust, spills and crumbs, giving you many more years of use.
Step5
Avoid eating or drinking when working at your computer. This is probably the most important step of all, as food and beverages are two of the biggest culprits in keyboard malfunctions. If you must eat at your desk, keep all food and drinks at a safe distance from your keyboard at all times.
Step6
Repeat Steps 1 through 3 as often as necessary. If you have followed all the steps above, you won’t need to clean your keyboard very often since it will have stayed clean on its own.
