Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- 1-2 tablespoons butter
- 1 large sweet onion chopped (about 1 cup)
- 1 large can (28 oz) whole or chopped tomatoes (or equivalent fresh)
- 1 8 oz can tomato sauce
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons fresh basil (1 tablespoon dried)
Step1
Melt butter in heavy bottomed skillet over medium heat. Cook onions, stirring, until golden.
Step2
Add tomatoes, salt, sugar and basil. Bring to a boil.
Step3
Reduce heat to simmer, stirring occasionally and cook 4-6 hours or until thick as ketchup.
Step4
Allow to cool. Pour sauce into covered glass or plastic container. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
