How to Get Extra Sleep During School

Many school-age children struggle with a lack of sleep. When classes start as early as 7 a.m., and after-school activities can keep them out long after dark, many students turn to sleeping during class to catch up on their sleep. If you're trying to get extra sleep during school, you need to know the tricks to catching up without flunking out.

Use the library for more than research. Whenever you have the opportunity to go the library to do research for a paper or project, head to the stacks. It's quiet and no one will bother you as you blissfully snooze with your head in a history book. Just try not to drool on the special collection volumes.

Skip the fries and tater tots. Grab a quick bite on your way outdoors and park yourself under a nice tree for a quick afternoon siesta. You can easily get a half-hour of sleep before the school bell rings.

    • 3

Know the true purpose of study hall. You spent all night studying, so use your spare time in study hall to catch up on your sleep. As long as the teacher is cool, you should have no trouble curling up in the back of the room.

Take advantage of movie Fridays. If you have any teachers who like to show movies or educational films in class, take advantage of the free time by snoozing quietly in the back row. Ask a friend to nudge you if you start snoring too loudly and drawing attention to yourself.

Get comfy. When you sleep during school, it's important to remember that quality is often more important than quantity in cat naps. Pad your backpack with a sweater or jacket to make a makeshift pillow.

I agree that the schedule that some of our kids have is worse than ours as working adults, esp kids who have to be on the bus an hour or more before actually getting to school or the child that has 3-4 hours of homework just about every night. I say if they can catch a snooze they should go for it!
