1
Decide what furniture and decorative items you'll be able to keep or refurbish. Once you've decided on a color scheme for your rock and roll room, you can stain or paint nightstands, dressers and bookshelves and alter chairs with slipcovers to match.
-
2
Choose a new wall color. Consider a neutral shade that you can cover with posters and other artwork. Although black walls might give your room the hardcore rock feel, you may get tired of the shade after a few months.

-
3
Select bedding to fit the rock theme. This is an area where you can add bold colors since you can change the bedspread, sheets or pillow shams easily. Try black, red, purple or black-and-white checks.
-
4
Find an eye-catching accent to set the tone for the room. Consider music-themed area rugs, wall hangings or even real instruments you've discovered at flea markets or second-hand shops. (See Resources below.)
-
5
Make room for a large entertainment system to play compact discs and videos of your favorite rock music artists.
-
6
Add rock-related touches like your compact disc collection displayed on the walls, posters of your favorite bands, autographed pictures and old album covers. Hang a bulletin board to display rock concert ticket stubs, programs, promo stickers and magazine covers of favorite artists. (See Resources below.)

Tips & Warnings
Don't start shopping for new furniture and accents until you've established a budget and listed the items you hope to acquire. You don't want to spend too much on an initial item only to find you won't have the money to complete the entire redesign.

As a children's room designer, I am asked to work with teen rooms all the time. The topic of a black room comes up a lot. I usually advise them to reduce the need for black to just one wall, usually the focal wall, of which the bed usually rests against. Then choose a complimentary color from the bedding, or from the room's accessories. Black does go with just about everything, so it's a great mix. For a fun twist on the black you can alternate stripes with a "matte flat" paint and a semi gloss. Try them as fat vertical stripes or for the daring, large horizontal stipes. Great suggestions for your readers. Have fun with your teens room, they are only around for such a short time! Thanks, Aaron -
