Emergencies happen and it is good to be prepared in the event that you are evacuated from your home. Have most of these things packed in a fire-proof box and ready to go. Here is how you can create an emergency evacuation kit and increase the safety of your loved ones.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Bring cash. If the electricity is out, you will not be able to use your credit or ATM cards.
Step2
Pack canned and dry foods. Make sure you buy food that can be preserved and snacked on. Candy bars, fruit bars and canned beans are all good options. You should also include plenty of bottled water; enough for your whole family.
Step3
Include a battery-powered radio and flashlights. Be sure to have plenty of extra batteries.
Step4
Make sure you have maps, ID's, social security cards, credit cards, medication, first aid kits and medications. You should even include your eyeglass prescriptions or any prescriptions for medications you take regularly, as you don't know how long you will be gone from home.
Step5
Put extra clothes and blankets for each family member in your kit. Also, you should include a sleeping bag for each person in case you have to sleep at an evacuation center.
Step6
Take current photos of family members. You never know when you might get separated and these will come in handy.
Step7
Remember to bring stocks and bonds which can be exchanged for money. Also, include all important documents regarding your family; birth certificates, marriage license, your will and even your prior tax returns. Assume that you may not be able to return home, so these things are a must.

Tips & Warnings

  • 1 gallon of water per person is recommended by the American Red Cross.
  • Don't wait until you are evacuated to get cash. That may be too late. You must have some that you keep in your kit at all times.
